Primary Care Message Resonates with Laymen Audience at Empire Convention

Rev. Kinzer M. Pointer, Pastor of Agape Fellowship Baptist Church, and Chair, Millennium Board of Managers addresses Laymen attendees.

Millennium Collaborative Care and Albany-based Alliance for Better Health were guest presenters at the Empire Baptist Missionary Convention of New York held July 27 in Albany.

Founded in August 1895 at the St. Phillips Baptist Church, Staten Island, NY, the Empire Baptist Missionary Convention is an organization of African American clergymen representing Baptist church organizations across New York State.

Millennium was represented by Al Hammonds, Executive Director; and Rev. Kinzer M. Pointer, Pastor of Agape Fellowship Baptist Church, and Chair, Millennium Board of Managers. They were joined by Jacob Reider, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Alliance for Better Health.

In addition to providing information and updates on the Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment Program (DSRIP) and the ongoing efforts to reduce avoidable hospital use by 25 percent; a highlight of the education session was an inspiring presentation by Pastor Pointer who provided personal insight into health conditions impacting African American males. In specific, Pastor Pointer polled the audience on 1) whether they had a primary care physician, and 2) had they seen their Physician for a wellness or other visit within the past year. While the result was the raising of numerous hands; there was the recognition by several others in the audience that they needed to act on this important information.

“Our objective is to continue to do the work of DSRIP and continue to effect positive change with audiences across our Western New York counties and across the state,” said Pastor Pointer. “I believe we achieved that today, and I look forward to seeing how these laymen leaders will continue to take this vital Primary Care message forward.”
