The objective of “Barber & Beauty Shop Initiative” (B & B Health Stop) is to bring cardio vascular health awareness to members of the community at locations that are most comfortable and convenient. While patrons visit the shops for hair services, they will at the same time have the opportunity to participate in self-monitored blood pressure screenings.

To enable the self-screenings, each barber/beauty shop will be supplied with a small digital blood pressure monitor which the patron can place around his or her wrist and then be able to read and record their own blood pressure. Instructions will be provided to all barber/beauty shops to aid in the process.

“The Barber and Beauty Shop Initiative is a partnership with local barber and beauty shops, creating opportunities for community members to self-monitor blood pressure and have linkage to essential healthcare services,” said Ebony Patterson-White, Community Health Worker Coordinator, Millennium Collaborative Care.

“With ongoing education and relationship development, the Community Health Center of Niagara and Pastor Raymond Allen have developed valuable relationships with local barber and beauty shops where we are now able to create ‘B & B Health Stop’ locations to the Niagara Falls Community. We have great hopes of expanding to the Buffalo area,” she added.

“CHCN is pleased to partner with Millennium Collaborative Care on the ‘B&B Health Stop initiative’. We pride ourselves on delivering access to quality healthcare to the community, while providing several alternatives to payments: sliding fee applications and market place enrollment. This an awesome way to build relationships in the community and conversation starters in Niagara Falls Beauty and Barbershops, ” said Felicia Johnson, Project Manager/Community Relations, Community Health Center of Niagara.

Community Health Center of Niagara offers all services and top-quality care, regardless of one’s ability to pay. They are a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) which means they offer their patients payment plans so they may come without worrying about how to pay. Community Health Center of Niagara will offer information and linkage to community members in need of a provider.

There will be a box at each barber and beauty shop location where clients may submit their name and phone number for follow up to obtain information about their provider options.
