Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center kicked off its milestone Million Hearts Project for better heart health on Monday.

Part of a national campaign spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Million Hearts strives to reduce illness and death from heart attack and stroke through community engagement and the use of a select set of evidence-based public health and clinical strategies.

“The implementation of the Million Hearts Project will lead to measurable improvements in cardiovascular disease outcomes across Niagara County,” said Memorial Chief Operating Officer Sheila Kee. “Million Hearts will be the perfect complement to Memorial’s enhanced cardiovascular care offerings – increasing awareness about heart disease prevention and empowering community members to better control their own heart health.”

Memorial recently opened a new cardiovascular rehab facility in The Heart Center of Niagara. A cardiac catheterization laboratory will open there in April and an all-new inpatient Heart and Stroke Care unit will open this fall.

Monday’s speakers were Kenyani Davis, M.D., of UBMD Internal Medicine and the assistant medical director of Millennium Collaborative Care (MCC), a Preferred Provider System under the DSRIP program, as well as Kenneth Gayles, M.D., a board certified Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
